Changemakers Presentation - Valerie Oves

This new project was a fun and interesting one as opposed to the previous one we did. Each group presented more interesting information alongside pictures of well known change makers from over the years who have contributed to the world we have today. The time periods range from the 1700's to the 2000's/todays time. The first group to present was group 3, presenting the 1700's era. They included change makers such as George Washington, Alice Paul, Alexander Hamilton, James Wilson, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison. All these change makers were influential for this time period because they all contributed towards the coming of the Constitution and shaping American Laws. To begin, Naomy presented George Washington letting us know information about his past, his experiences growing up and serving as a general in war, and how he came to be the first president of the United States of America. The other couple change makers that were talked about, are also very well-known, and we have a good couple ideas of who they are. For example, Alexander Hamilton has a play about him that many people have seen and have learned his history and how he became a founding father. Group 3 did a fantastic job going over their change makers as well as adding pictures and information for the audience to follow along with. Personally, it kept me engaged and interested in learning new things about famous influential people.

The following group, was group one, presenting the 1800's era. I will admit, I didn't know a couple of the change makers that were talked about, but that makes this project a good one, because we are learning new facts about our history. Change makers included Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Samuel Colt, Harriet Tubman, and Thomas Edison. Of course starting off with Abraham Lincoln, we know that he was the president that abolished slavery. Amanda presented his life very well and she included facts about him that I hadn't previously learned. An interesting one was Darshan's presentation about Samuel Colt. I personally had no idea who he was until I was shown him. I found it very entertaining how he had made his gun and how his brand is still around to this day. Adriana had spoken about Harriet Tubman, who I believe was and EXCELLENT choice for a change maker in that era. She helped and saved so many lives and it goes to show that Harriet Tubman was insanely resilient and dedicated to her cause that she was going to do whatever she had to to make it out. Not many people can say they faced the hardships she had to especially with her history too. She was selfless and wanted the best for everyone in her position, going to show how I think she was an amazing person to present.

Next up was group 2 presenting the 1900's time period. I think this is my favorite presentation of all four groups due to the fact that it is the most recent but I feel like it contains the most recent and really influential individuals who really paved the way for the following era. In this group, Joey presented Martin Luther King Jr, Josh presented Franklin D. Roosevelt, Kaleb presented Claudette Colvin, Luis presented John F Kennedy, Jason presented Cesar Chavez, and Daniel presented Woodrow Wilson. Within these change makers, the most important and amazing one was Martin Luther King Jr.. He stood up for slavery and segregation that was still ongoing in the world at the time and he made his change. He was a civil rights leader and Baptist minister. He was really well involved with the community. He was not going to give up no matter what was thrown at him. He delivered a well known and famous speech named "I Had A Dream" in which he talked about how he saw the future. He wanted equality, he wanted peace, and he wanted freedom. The images seems so recent and it is something that moves you because it goes to show that a couple of years ago, that the was the reality of the time. This group did a good job presenting their change makers, adding valuable information that really sparks conversation and gets your mind thinking.

Lastly, it was group four, my group, that presented the current time era, the 2000's. Now this is one of the most influential, changing, impactive era in my opinion. This is the time were technology spiked in use and changed the world as a whole. Tais had Michelle Obama, I had Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos was presented by Valery, Jimmy Wales was presented by Yanny, Yeffry had Barack Obama, Anatassiya did Malala Yousafzai, and Yuliskey presented Mark Zuckerberg. My group had lots of technological change makers. Ranging from Elon musk to Jimmy Wales, they have all had something to do with technological advancements that has affected most of the population. Elon Musk has his Tesla company that makes electrical cars, changing the use from gas cars to help better the world and ecosystem from all the pollution and damage we are causing it. Barack and Michelle Obama are past president and first lady who were very involved with their country and serving the people. These change makers that were talked about are all current individuals who have made a change in our personal lives whether we have been affected directly or indirectly. I like how all my peers collaborated on this assignment, and each included many interesting and important facts about our chosen person. Images were also included and all the information was tied back to the foundation of Miami Dade College and what they have done as a school to better the students.

All in all, this was a very fun presentation and project to work on because we got to research on our own, upload our own pictures, and find information we thought was good enough to share with the class. Our previous presentation just involved gathering information and reading off of a textbook and sharing it with the class. With this presentation about change makers, it definitely allowed myself to come out of my shell, and be more open with my information and details that I was sharing.
